New Mahindra THAR First Look

Mumbai: Mahindra Auto, the automotive subsidiary of the billion-dollar Mahindra group, revealed its much-awaited iconic SUV, THAR, in an all-new avatar. On the occasion of India’s 74th Independence Day, Mahindra & Mahindra revealed one of India’s favorite off-road focused SUV digitally with modern upgrades and embellishments.

The all-new THAR, Mahindra claims, is a quantum leap in terms of performance, everyday comfort & convenience, technology and safety, while staying true to its core promise of unmatched off-roading capability and iconic build design.

The new THAR will be available in two trim lines, the AX models focused on adventure and off-roading, and the LX models focused on Lifestyle driving. The AX models will come with a soft-top and 6-seater configuration as stock, with the option to upgrade to hard-top/convertible-top and 4-seater option. The LX models will come with a hard-top and front facing 4-seater configuration as standard with the option to customize these elements.

The Exterior: What it looks like

The new generation THAR retains its iconic 2-door silhouette and rugged patches across the body. Unlike the tall and narrow tall-boy image of the penultimate generation, the latest model adds purposeful, contemporary touches and design elements to the THAR.

The wide and low silhouette

It now stands wider, lower and better-balanced, providing a dominating stance on the road. The new attitude of the THAR seems controversial to many purists, remarking its similarities to the Jeep Wrangler, with crowds of fans appreciating the change as well.

  • On popular demand, Mahindra has finally introduced the option to avail a factory-fitted hard-top or a convertible-top apart from the soft-top option, and the new change has been dearly welcomed across the THAR community.

  • It gets new LED DRLs and fog lamps in the front, while the rear bumper gets the new, modern take on square LED tail lamps.

  • The 45.72 cm (R18) Deep Silver Alloy Wheels make it look stunning all around and the 255/65 R18 all-terrain tyres, the largest tyre in its class, improve practicality and drive quality.

  • THAR is provided with dual tone bumpers and the robust wheel arches are also retained, which distinguish it as a serious off-roader from mere childish opponents.

With its bold, muscular and boxy design and sheer dominant structure, the THAR continues to impose its presence wherever it goes, overshadowing any other car in front of it.

The Interior: What it feels like

This bold and muscular design approach flows into the interior of the THAR as well. While retaining the commanding driving position that is an integral part of the THAR’s DNA, the all-new THAR has a completely redesigned interior that mirrors the robust, retro-styled cues of the Thar’s exteriors.

  • It gets purposeful all-black interior theme with silver accents that complements perfectly.

  • The cabin has been purposely made waterproof and all the equipment and buttons present on the dash get an IP rating, so that you can simply plug in a hose and wash your THAR after a day in the mud.

  • It gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with all the bells and whistles and adds an extra bit of technology with separate features such as adventure statistics display for off-road and on-road ventures.

  • The MID or the instrument cluster has also been upgraded with better looks and performance, so is the steering wheel with mounted audio and phone controls, and all other elements in the interior of the THAR.

  • The front seats, though large, lack a bit of cushioning and try hard to hold you in your place while on turns or uneven patches.

  • The rear seats, on the other hand, are a huge improvement on the previous generation with a front facing stance, big adjustable headrests and ample leg and head room. The traditional jump seats (for 6-seater configuration) are still provided with the AX trims.

  • The new THAR also gets an improved sound system with roof mounted speakers.

Everyday Comfort & Convenience

The new THAR is a modern take on the rugged and robust old generation, and packs useful and practical features that you would expect from any contemporary SUV at its price point.

The new Thar has been designed to provide amazing comfort and convenience in all driving conditions, off-road, on the highway or in the city, making the interior design as ergonomic as possible for all passengers and not just the driver.

  • The front facing rear seats come with the option of 50:50 split to increase the boot space when necessary.

  • Driver seat with adjustable height and lumbar support.

  • One-Touch tip & slide mechanism on the co-driver seat for easy accessibility to the rear seats.

  • Highly demanded power windows and electrically adjustable ORVMs.

  • The new THAR also gets cruise control and automatic transmission for an enhanced driving experience, not just during off-roading but also on the highways and in the city.

The new THAR is been built on Mahindra’s rugged 3rd Generation chassis and tested extensively in some of the harshest terrain in India and across the world. It gets an all-new suspension setup and is equipped with advanced off-road hardware.

Independent Front Suspension & Multi-Link Rear Suspension set-up. Shift-on-the-Fly 4x4 Manual Shift Transfer Case with Low Ratio. First-in-Class Brake Locking Differential. Class-leading approach (41.8 deg), departure (36.8 deg) & ramp over (27 deg) angles. Ground clearance of 226mm in unladen condition and water wading depth of 650mm.

Breathtaking Performance

All-new powertrains

The all-new Thar is powered by two all-new engines which set new standards in terms of performance, refinement and reliability.

It is powered by the 2.0L mStallion TGDi petrol engine, and the 2.2L mHawk Diesel engine. The mStallion TGDi petrol engine produces 150 bhp of power & 320 Nm of torque, while the mHawk CRDe diesel engine produces 130 bhp of power & 320 Nm of torque.

Both the engines are offered with a choice of 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission, with an authentic 4x4 manual shift transfer case with a low ratio. The new AT option will encourage new customers to buy the legendary THAR, as they could now drive their off-road SUV even in the city traffic easily.

The Safety & Protection
The THAR comes standard with airbags and ABS

The all-new THAR gets a host of safety features for all-around protection. New safety features include a crash-safety compliant bodyshell and a first-in-class ESP with Rollover Mitigation.

It also gets a built-in roll-cage with 3-Point seat belts for all passengers, a first in the segment. Dual airbags and ABS, hill hold and hill descend control as well as rear parking sensors, all of which were lacking in the old generation THAR. It also gets ISOFIX child seat mounts for safe adventures with young adventurers.

Mahindra anticipates that the all-new THAR will not only attract die-hard Thar enthusiasts, but also appeal to all those people who have always dreamt of owning an iconic vehicle, with all the comforts and features of a contemporary SUV. Mahindra has scheduled the official launch of the new THAR on October 2nd, when it will disclose the prices and start the bookings.
